The Statbot: FriendFeed Sucks, Twitter rocks, Mesh, TwitterSpy and Dave Winer - Software Generated Steve Gillmor

  • Hao · 1 year ago
Haha, Gillmor to the nth power. Markov chain FTW!
  • Yuvi Panda · 1 year ago
Markov Chains ftw :) Steve Gillmor makes the perfect subject - long pieces, small number of links, and limited vocabulary so that it kinda almost makes sense ;)

read steve gillmor with a strong rap beat, phrase by phrase, with a drum machine, cranked up, you will see how good he is. for americans, think sf beat poet, or nyc poetry slams. try it in your head with any of those when he first wrote for tc. it all falls into place. people have different styles. americans are so homogenized they don't always get that.

the ranting on steve gillmor reminds me of american junior high school, where the cool in-crowd mocks the odd ducks. meet any of them twenty years later, the in-crowd is boring as shit, the odd ones are amazing.

Chill up dude. I have nothing against Gillmor - except that what he writes is way over *my* head. The problem may be with me, btw.
  • gregorylent · 1 year ago
don't be so thin-skinned, this is not about you, it is about the feeders around the gillmor thing, nattering to each other. yu just did something cool.
  • Yuvi Panda · 1 year ago
Well, what Steve Gillmor writes *is* way over many people's heads. I said many, not all. Not everyone needs to like Shakespeare, right? Being from Tamil Nadu, I guess you know the folks who absolutely detested having to learn ancient Tamil Literature, right?
  • gregorylent · 1 year ago
you did it artfully, beautifully, poetically. my observation is about the level of consciousness that was in tech crunch comments, friendfeed comments, and i said it perfectly. it ain't about you.

did you ever read ponniyan selvam, by kalki. (i did, in english, five volumes from landmark bookstore.) man it is great, like dickens, but better. tamil nadu came alive, a story from 1000 years ago, was syndicated in the tamil papers, people lined up all day to read the next installment in the 1950's.

sort of like waiting for the next statbot post on friendfeed.. :-)

Are your comments a Markov chain?
  • reechard · 1 year ago
Nicely done, Yuvi! When will we get software-generated podcasts to match, adapted to the voiceprint of the individual(s) being modeled?

Blank comment? Did Disqus lose some data?
  • jeffsonstein · 1 year ago
yes, not sure why... I replied (via email link):

too many of my students have too little humor about this sort of work
so I enjoyed seeing the results of your playfulness

bug in disqus, i cannot delete a comment that is in the wrong position, and if i delete the contents and leave it blank, and close, it prints it anyway.. a sign of voracity? anyway, sorry for messing up your comment string

I'm sorry, but this article makes very little sense, and I'm a pretty technical guy. Is it just me or is it written a little schizophrenicly? What's his point?
  • Jesse · 1 year ago
Oh, nm, it *is* giberish. Didn't quite pass the turing test, but nearly ;-)

Twitter rocks only when you have taken right decision in choosing your friends or the people you are following because that's really helpful and you really get updated by your friend's tweets..

I'm sort of using, both, joined at the same time, I prefer friend feed, reason it gives me a handy plugin fpor my browser I can just hit the button and feed is ready. Infect I'm using both side by side. My twitter feed is integrated with friend feed. So for me both of these are working.

Those of us who have been using shared items for years would lose all of the data, in the process freeing us from the tyranny of our jobs as consumers. But over time the true spirits emerge. That’s one of the things we do to make money will evolve to follow this new architecture.

I agree with every single word of this article. Friend Feed sucks indeed. I have not enjoyed it from the very beginning. Now I am not using it at all, thanks God.
By the way, Twitter has lots of vulnerabilities indeed; I am not feeling safe while using it. Thanks for this great article about software. I will be looking forward to other great ones from you!

Of course that some suck and others don't from your own perspective, but the easy way is to find the one that works just fine for you and your site. I mean, there are millions of plugins which could be used. You just have to spend a little time searching for the perfect one:))

Wow it is really nice written article here. But I think you are to harsh to all these pieces of software. Friendfeed is not so bad as you have written here for sure. Twitter is not rocking so much to my mind.. Every software has it's bad sides and it will be always like that. However thanks for publishing it here mate. I will be really waiting for other great posts from you in the future mate.
